It may further rejuvenate your party on BOTH sides of the Border.

The traditional commitment to the Union is, in my humble opinion, the Conservative 'Clause Four'.

Why not argue for abolition of the Union and put forward plans for a NEW agreement for the nations of our Islands (ROI included)- something like the Nordic Council?

Just a thought. I look foward to any replies I may receive to my suggestion,=.
Why should the Scots Tories be blamed for breaking up the Union? The English could do it just as well. Why don't the Tories in England back independence? The Union IS the reason many of us are Tories in Scotland Sokeboy, we've been here before I think......

I've wondered about something like that too, though perhaps not so radical. I'd thought about maybe something similar to Canada where there are provincial governments (equating to the UK Assemblies) & then a federal government co-ordinating all the provinces(equating to Westminister). However, among other things, that would require setting up an English government. I notice you include the ROI in your suggestion - why not? Perhaps we could set up trade agreements, which is what the EU was originally meant to be & then opt out of the EU. Which would give us all our sovereignty along with the 'comfort factor' of not having to 'go it alone.

Diasy,

From what I understand, many English people would like to have their own Parliament/assembly in the same way Scotland, Wales and NI have.

The trouble is that England is far too large, in both area and population to be a 'uk region' in it's own right. That's cetainly what the Eurocrats think anywway. This is why we have all the talk of the English regions being pushed at us by the EUSSR.

England only needs two levels of Government- local, and national based at Westminster.

But we have to realise that to keep our own Government for our own nation it wil mean having to leave both the UK and EUSSR. We can still work with our celtic neighbours but we need a new agreement that goes beyond the old Union, which has now been knackered due to devolution.

Anyway, isn't this thread about Scotland ONLY?

Sorrry to go o/t
